(LEBANON, Ill., March 27)—Harris-Stowe State University senior guard Chanel Ross has been named a first-team All-America selection by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Ross was one of three American Midwest Conference players who picked up post-season accolades from the NAIA.
In addition to Ross, McKendree University senior forward Heather Elders and Columbia College sophomore forward Rachel Oswald were named as NAIA honorable mention All-America selections. The honors were announced following the championship game of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship on Tuesday in Jackson, Tenn.
Ross, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., enjoyed a memorable senior year in leading the Hornets to a 23-10 overall record and their second consecutive appearance at the NAIA Division I National Championship. Ross averaged 20.7 points, 7.8 assists and 6.5 steals per game in 2007-08. She led NAIA Division I in both steals and assists, and was third in the nation in scoring. For her efforts, Ross was named the AMC Player of the Year.
In the first round of the NAIA national tournament, Ross scored 19 points in leading eighth-seeded Harris-Stowe to a 73-64 upset win over top-seeded Oklahoma City University. That marked the first-ever NAIA Tournament victory for the Hornets.
Elders, who is from Energy, Ill., helped guide McKendree to its fifth consecutive NAIA Division I National Championship berth. She averaged 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Both totals ranked third on the Bearcat squad. A three-year starter for McKendree, Elders became just the ninth player in team history to reach the 1,000-point mark. The Bearcats finished the season with a record of 24-9 and won the AMC regular-season and tournament championships.
Oswald was named the AMC Newcomer of the Year after leading Columbia in both scoring and rebounding. Oswald, who hails from Boonville, Mo., contributed 15.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Cougars. She was also second on the team in steals (59) and third in assists (54). Columbia College posted a record of 17-15 in 2007-08 and advanced to the championship game of the AMC Tournament.
