(SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 26)--The Cougars of Columbia College captured the 2008 American Midwest Conference Championship with a 9-0 win over the Owls of William Woods University.  Columbia now advances to the NAIA Regional Tournament in Springfield, Missouri, on May 6th.
Columbia scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Rachel Brawner doubled to bring in Samantha Stringer who earned a walk and stole second base to get into scoring position.
 
But Columbia opened the flood gates in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five unanswered runs.
Columbia's Valerie Teter smashed a grand slam home run over the left field fence in the second inning to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead.  Columbia put two more runs up in the bottom of the third inning and one more in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure the win.
 
Columbia's Valerie Teter threw a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters to earn the victory.  William Woods's Rachel Nachtweih gets the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits in two-and-a-third innings.
