SPARTANS TO HOST PIRATES IN BATTLE FOR PLAYOFF POSITION IN AMC GAME OF THE WEEK
Women's Basketball - Tue, Feb. 7, 2017
ST. LOUIS – With just three weeks left in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) basketball season, games are becoming more important, and on Thursday night, a traditional rivalry in the AMC takes center stage with major postseason implications. The Missouri Baptist University Spartans (8-14/7-11 AMC) will host the Park University Pirates (5-15/5-12 AMC) at the Petty Sports and Recreation Center for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
Park Pirates: The Pirates hopes of making the AMC postseason are beginning to dwindle, with four games left against teams either in the top-25 or receiving votes in the poll. Thursday night's game, though is one that could really boost the Pirates. Park beat Missouri Baptist in Parkville in December, so a win on Thursday would pull them to within a half-game of the Spartans and it would draw them even in the loss column. Additionally, it would give the Pirates the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist Spartans: For MBU, their home stretch of the season comes to an end this week. The Spartans final four games of the regular season will all be on the road. They are in the postseason field if the season was to end today, but their margin for error is razor thin. The Spartans are one game clear of Stephens College – who occupies the ninth spot in the AMC standings - but the Spartans still have a home date with #13 Columbia College and a road trip to #1 Freed-Hardeman University to finish the year.
The Pirates hold a 10-5 advantage in the head-to-head series since they returned to the AMC for the 2009-10 season. Park has won the last five meetings against the Spartans, with the last Missouri Baptist win coming on February 27, 2014 in St. Louis.
St. Louis, Mo. (Petty Sports and Recreation Center)
The Spartans and Pirates have one of the best rivalries in the AMC across many sports. With the additional postseason implications in play, this game should be an intense battle from opening tap to final buzzer.
