Women's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 7, 2017
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark.- After a much needed 5-0 win over St. Louis College of Pharmacy, the Hornets looked to pick up their second conference win of the year today against Williams Baptist College. They did just that with a 2-1 win, but added an exciting double-overtime style to it.
After WBC's Maria Ramirez put one past Hornet goalkeeper, Camila Chaves (FR/Bogota, Columbia), in the first half, HSSU stepped up their game in a big way.
Johanna Wallstab (FR/Munich, Germany ) tallied her 6th assist this season when she sent a cross past a defender and found Justice Corn (FR/St. Louis, Missouri ) who tied the game at 1-1 with a shot in the top left corner of the net. Corn's second half goal would eventually force overtime.
In the first 10 minutes of extra play, WBC had three opportunities to end the game, but all three times, Camila Chaves saved the day. The big save from Chaves came in the 95' when Maria Ramirez took a PK and sent the ball directly at Chaves hands. With no goals scored in the first 10 minutes, the game went to double-overtime.
At the 101' of the game, Lizette Popoca (FR/Waukegan, Illinois ) ended the game when she got a pass from Yuliana Noyola Miranda (FR/Cancun, Quintana Mexico ), and chipped the ball into the back of the net after dribbling through multiple Eagle defenders to give the Hornets a 2-1 win.
HSSU recorded 17 shots today with 6 of them being on-goal. Chaves was most notable today picking up 10 saves in 101 minutes.
Harris-Stowe will be back in action on Tuesday when they continue conference play against Central Baptist College. Kick-off at Hornets Field is set for 1 p.m.
