Kansas City, Mo. - After a historic run through the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Tournament, the Cougars fell tonight in the Championship game to Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College 77-61. The Cougars, who entered the tournament on an automatic bid after winning the American Midwest Conference tournament championship, end their season tonight with a 30-8 record. Previous to this year the Cougars had won just three games in 14 appearances in the tournament, but this year was a different story as Columbia finishes the tournament with a 4-1 record. Rocky Mountain celebrates their first ever men's basketball National Championship and finishes their season with a 28-9 record.
A shell-shocked Cougar squad trailed 45-24 at the half. Shooting just 36 percent from the field, the Cougars couldn't hold back the sharp shooting Battlin' Bears who shot just under 60 percent from the field and drained six baskets from behind the arc in the first frame. After an 11-3 run to start the contest, Rocky Mountain closed out the half with a 16-3 run. Two Battlin' Bears were already in double figures at the half.

Columbia started the second frame with a basket but Rocky Mountain gave the Cougars no room to make a run as they pushed their lead and kept it the entire contest. Columbia was able to cut the deficit to 16 in the final minutes, but it was not enough as Rocky Mountain walked away with the championship.

Christian Lewis led the Cougars, as he has done all season, with 24 points. Brett Hoskins chipped in 13 and three assists.

Following today's contest the All-American teams as well as the All-Tournament team was announced. Columbia senior Christian Lewis was the lone member named to the All-American team and this week's All-Tournament team. The Lincoln, Neb. native ends his career averaging just over 14 points a game and pulling down 256 rebounds. Christian was a first-team all-conference member this season for Columbia.

Along with individual player awards, Columbia also earned this year's Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award and Charles A. Kriegel Award. This award is given to the team that displays the most sportsmanship during its play at the national tournament. The Charles A. Krigel Award is presented to the coach of the squad that earns the Naismith-Liston award.
