(LEBANON, Ill., April 28)--The final American Midwest Conference weekly baseball honors for the 2009 season have been announced by the conference office.
Clark Johnson of Hannibal-LaGrange College has been selected as the AMC Baseball Player of the Week, while Nolan Martz of McKendree University earned the AMC Baseball Pitcher of the Week award. The honors covered the period from April 20-26.
Johnson, a senior first baseman/outfielder from St. Peters, Mo., collected eight hits in 14 at-bats for a batting average of .571 for the week. Johnson slugged a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs as the Trojans took three of four games against Williams Baptist College. Johnson scored seven runs and added a pair of stolen bases on the week.
This is the second time in 2009 that Johnson has earned AMC Player of the Week honors. For the year, Johnson is batting .421 with six home runs and 39 runs batted in.
Martz, a junior right-hander from East Alton, Ill., came up with one of his biggest performances of the season in the Bearcats' most meaningful series of the year. Martz tossed a two-hit shutout in an 11-0 victory at William Woods University on April 25. Martz walked just one batter and struck out eight as he improved to 6-4 on the season. Martz's victory in game one sparked a sweep of the No. 23-ranked Owls and allowed McKendree to clinch the AMC regular-season championship.
In 2009, Martz is 6-4 with an earned-run average of 4.75. In 11 starts, Martz has thrown six complete games and leads the Bearcats in strikeouts with 71 in 60 2/3 innings pitched.
