William Woods Junior Pitcher Nick Wooley

(FULTON, Mo., June 10) - Junior Nick Wooley of William Woods University was drafted by the Kansas City Royals today in the Major League Baseball Draft.  Wooley, a 6'2" pitcher from Edwardsville, Ill., was selected in the 12th round.  He was the 362nd player taken in the 2009 MLB draft.  

Wooley was 8-1 with a 3.31 ERA in his only season with the Owls.  Wooley transferred to William Woods from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
 
As an Owl, Wooley threw 70.2 innings, allowed 60 hits, struck out 89 and walked 27.  Opponents hit .226 on the season against Wooley.
 
Wooley is the first player in the history of the William Woods University baseball program to be drafted by Major League Baseball.  On April 20th, Wooley was selected the American Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.  He was also selected First Team All-AMC, AMC Co-Pitcher of the Year, and AMC Newcomer of the Year.
 
William Woods University finished the 2009 season 34-15.  They finished second in the regular season and postseason tournament.  The Owls reached NAIA Top 25 status on three occasions this season, and were among other receiving votes in the final NAIA Top 25 poll.  WWU finished one win shy of tying the school record for win (35) set in 2004 (35-32).  William Woods set a new school record for team batting average (.323) and ERA (4.31).
