(LEBANON, Ill., June 17)-For the ninth consecutive year, McKendree University has claimed the top spot in the American Midwest Conference President's Cup standings.
McKendree held off runner-up William Woods University to claim the 2008-09 AMC President's Cup. The Bearcat athletic teams amassed 335 points in the standings, which are based on a team's finish in regular-season or post-season conference competition. William Woods posted 305 points, while Missouri Baptist University came in third with 227.5 points.
With its latest victory, McKendree has won the AMC President's Cup every year since the award was instituted prior to the 2000-01 academic year.
"I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes," said McKendree president Dr. James Dennis. "They have proven year after year that they are outstanding students as well as high-caliber athletes. It is an amazing feat to win the President's Cup for nine consecutive years. While that is an accomplishment we are proud of here at McKendree, we are equally as proud of the high graduation rate that our student-athletes enjoy. Our coaches have done an excellent job of developing outstanding students and teams that represent our institution very well."
Of the 13 championship-sponsored sports in the AMC, McKendree earned five first-place finishes in 2008-09. The Bearcats won the regular-season championships in men's soccer, women's soccer and men's basketball, while men's and women's track and field swept its way to victory in the AMC Outdoor Championships, which was the final event of the year. William Woods had the most overall first-place showings during the year with six. The Owls grabbed outright titles in men's cross country, women's cross country, softball, men's golf and women's golf, and shared the regular-season championship in women's basketball.
