(LEBANON, Ill., March 7)--The Columbia College women's basketball team capped off a perfect season in American Midwest Conference action by posting a 70-56 victory Monday night at home against William Woods University in the championship game of the 2011 AMC Tournament.
AMC Freshman of the Year Heather English led a balanced attack with 13 points as the Cougars collected their 19th straight victory. Columbia, which went 16-0 during AMC regular-season action and is ranked No. 14 in NAIA Division I, added three more post-season wins to push their overall record to 28-5. By winning the AMC Tournament championship, Columbia has earned the AMC's automatic berth into the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship, which is set for March 16-22 at Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn. Qualifiers and first-round pairings will be announced on Wednesday, March 9.
Ashley Fisher added 11 points in Monday's victory for Columbia, while Julie Teeple came off the bench to post eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Cougars held a slight 33-31 lead at the half, then held William Woods to just 21.7 percent shooting in the second half to pull away for the victory.
William Woods slipped to 29-4 overall. The Owls were led by AMC Player of the Year Rachel Baker, who had a game-high 19 points. Miranda Loesch chipped in with 12 points for William Woods, which finished second in the AMC regular-season standings at 14-2. The Owls, ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA Division I poll, are in line for an at-large bid to the national tournament.
