(LEBANON, Ill., March 14)--Derek McCawley of William Woods University and Derek Gordon of Park University have been honored by the American Midwest Conference for their accomplishments on the baseball field for the period covering March 7-13.
McCawley was picked as the AMC Baseball Player of the Week, while Gordon grabbed AMC Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades. The honors were announced Monday evening by the league office.
McCawley, a junior shortstop from Phoenix, Ariz., collected five hits in 12 at-bats for a .417 average. He blasted two home runs and drove in 11 runs in leading William Woods to a four-game AMC sweep at Williams Baptist College. McCawley slugged .917 for the week.
Gordon, a freshman pitcher from Lincoln, Neb., pitched in two games and did not allow a run in either outing. In Park's 12-0 AMC victory over Harris-Stowe State University, Gordon tossed a complete-game one-hitter. He walked three and struck out four in the outing. In addition, Gordon retired the side in order to close out the Pirates' 6-1 win over Dakota State University. Gordon, who is the younger brother of Kansas City Royals' third baseman/outfielder Alex Gordon, has not allowed an earned run in 2011.
