McKendree Upsets Top-Seeded Missouri Baptist to Win Postseason Tournament 

St. Louis, Mo. – The McKendree College Bearcats waltzed through the winner’s bracket of the American Midwest Conference postseason tournament to claim the league title today, defeating top-seeded Missouri Baptist College in the championship game by a score of 15-9.  The tournament title guarantees McKendree a berth into regional playoffs, which are set to begin next week in St. Charles, Mo. As the runner-up in the tournament, Missouri Baptist will also advance into the six-team Region V Playoff.

In a vote by league coaches, Eddie Breuchaud, a senior outfielder and pitcher for the McKendree Bearcats, has been named the AMC Player of the Year. The Greenville, Ill. native played in 48 games for McKendree, tallying a .369 batting average with 58 hits in 157 appearances at the plate. He knocked 11 doubles, six triples and ten home runs, in addition to recording 45 runs batted in. Breuchaud committed just two fielding errors and stole five bases.

Mike Chornak, a junior pitcher for the Missouri Baptist Spartans, has been recognized with the 2002 Pitcher of the Year award.  Chornak, who hails from Brook Park, Ohio, appeared in 14 games for the Spartans this season, recording four complete games, nine wins and one loss in 73 innings pitched. He notched a 3.95 earned run average, allowing 32 earned runs. Chornak totaled 50 strikeouts and allowed 43 walks.

The AMC Newcomer of the Year honor is presented to the top transfer student-athlete in the AMC. Jason McStoots, also a member of the Spartan baseball squad, is the 2002 recipient of that award. McStoots played in 51 games at shortstop this season and recorded a batting average of .463 with 82 hits in 177 at-bats. He tallied 16 doubles, five triples, 13 home runs and 55 RBI. In addition, the Mendota, Ill. native swiped 19 bases in 21 attempts.

Dustin Richert, the second baseman for the McKendree Bearcats, is the 2002 AMC Freshman of the Year. Richert is from Marion, Ill. and played in 45 games in his rookie campaign for the Bearcats. He stepped to the plate 139 times this season, totaling 54 hits, including 15 doubles, one triple and one home run. He recorded a .388 batting average, in addition to tallying 39 RBI. In addition, Richert notched a .971 fielding average, committing just four defensive errors.

The 2002 AMC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year is Jim Boehne from McKendree College. Boehne led the Bearcats to an overall regular season record of 32-14 and a second place finish in the AMC regular season race.

A complete list of the 17-member AMC all-conference team, the honorable mention squad and the academic all-conference team, are included below. Members of the academic all-conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
