2003 Women's Soccer All-Conference Team

Missouri Baptist’s Cally Gavlick earns most valuable player accolades,
McKendree’s Tim Strange garners coach of the year honors

Columbia, Mo. – In a vote by American Midwest Conference (AMC) coaches, Cally Gavlick, a senior forward for the Missouri Baptist University Spartans, has been named the league’s most valuable player in women’s soccer for 2003. Gavlick, who hails from Collinsville, Ill. totaled nine goals for the Spartans during the regular season, tying the Missouri Baptist mark for scores in a season. In addition to leading her team in scoring, Gavlick also passed out five assists.

For the third time in four years, the AMC Coach of the Year is Tim Strange from McKendree College. Strange led the Bearcats to a perfect 4-0 record in league play, giving his team an automatic berth to the NAIA Region V Tournament, which begins next week. The Bearcats finished the regular season with an overall mark of 11-6-1.

Natalie Jameson, a goalkeeper for the Bearcats from McKendree, is the 2003 AMC Freshman of the Year. In Jameson’s first collegiate season, she logged 1,492 minutes in goal, allowing just 15 goals. The Troy, Ill. native notched 78 saves and recorded six shutouts.

Jessica Vasiloff, who is also a member of the Bearcat soccer squad, is the 2003 recipient of the AMC Newcomer of the Year award. The Newcomer of the Year honor is handed out the top transfer-student in the AMC. Vasiloff, a junior defender, played and started in all 17 Bearcat matches this season, posting four assists. Vasiloff is a native of Granite City, Ill.

The Fair Play & Sportsmanship Award is annually presented to one AMC women’s soccer squad based on two areas of sportsmanship. First, teams are awarded points based on their total number of red and yellow cards accumulated throughout the regular season. Second, AMC coaches vote on the squads, ranking their level of sportsmanship during their respective contests. The 2003 recipient of the Fair Play & Sportsmanship Award is Hannibal-LaGrange College.

A complete list of the 16-member first team, honorable mention squad and the academic all-conference team, are listed below. Members of the academic all-conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
