Columbia College Claims AMC Postseason Tournament Crown

St. Louis, Mo. In an upset victory over top-seed Missouri Baptist College, the No. 2 seeded Columbia College Cougars won the AMC championship match today, defeating the Spartans by a score of 3-0. The victory gives the Cougars an automatic berth into the NAIA Region V playoffs which are set to begin next week.

Sheldon Richard, a forward for the Missouri Baptist College Spartans, has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player in men’s soccer for the 2001 regular season.  The junior from Trinidad & Tobago appeared in 16 matches this season. He scored 16 goals and added 17 assists, leading his team to its first-ever regular season conference title in men’s soccer in school history.

Addae Rique, a midfielder for the Spartans, is the 2001 AMC Freshman of the Year. Rique, who, like Richard, hails from Trinidad & Tobago, turned in seven goals and 10 assists in his first collegiate season at Missouri Baptist.

The Newcomer of the Year honor is bestowed upon the top transfer student in the AMC, as voted on by league coaches. Ben Jones, a junior midfielder for the McKendree College Bearcats is the 2001 recipient of this award. The Fairview Heights, Mo. native played in 15 matches in his first season as a Bearcat, tallying eight goals and four assists.

Juan Pablo Favero, head coach for Missouri Baptist, is the AMC Coach of the Year, based on a vote by his AMC peers. Favero led the Spartans to a regular season AMC title, boasting a 4-0-2 mark in conference action. Missouri Baptist’s overall season record for the regular season was 12-3-2.

The Fair Play & Sportsmanship Award is annually presented to one AMC men’s soccer squad based on two areas of sportsmanship. First, teams are awarded points based on their total number of red and yellow cards accumulated throughout the regular season. Second, AMC coaches vote on the squads, ranking their level of sportsmanship during their respective contests. The 2001 recipient of the Fair Play Award is Columbia College.

A complete list of the 14-member AMC all-conference team, the honorable mention squad and the academic all-conference team, are listed on the following pages. Members of the academic all-conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
