Missouri Baptist Ends Columbia’s AMC Tournament Title Streak


Lebanon, Ill. – Missouri Baptist University ended Columbia College’s 12-year reign as American Midwest Conference Tournament champions when the Spartans posted a 3-2 victory in Saturday’s conference championship match at Columbia, Mo. Missouri Baptist, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, won by scores of 30-24, 24-30, 24-30, 30-23 and 15-8. The victory gives the Spartans the AMC’s automatic bid to the NAIA Region V Tournament. The eight-team, single-elimination tournament begins Tuesday at campus sites.

As the runner-up in the AMC Tournament, the Cougars also receive an automatic berth to the regional playoff. Two teams from the Heart of America Athletic Conference as well as four at-large teams will round out the regional playoff field. The winner of the Region V Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in San Diego, Calif. at Point Loma Nazarene University, which will take place Nov. 30-Dec. 3.

In a vote by league coaches, Ana Mercado of Missouri Baptist University has been selected as the Most Valuable Player in the American Midwest Conference. Mercado, a junior outside hitter from Tepic, Mexico, led the AMC in kills per game at 5.4. She also had a league-leading 149 service aces on the year. For her efforts, Mercado was also selected as the AMC Newcomer of the Year, which is given to the top transfer student-athlete in the conference.

The 2005 AMC Freshman of the Year is Luana Branco of Columbia College. Branco, a setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, dished out 1,232 assists during the regular season, and was second in the AMC with 11 assists per game. Branco also contributed 171 kills, 106 blocks, 384 digs and 41 service aces in her freshman season.

The AMC Libero of the Year is presented to the top defensive specialist in the league. The 2005 recipient is Tracey Abell of Missouri Baptist University. Abell, a freshman from St. Charles, Mo., led the AMC with 538 digs in the regular season for an average of 5.7 per game. Abell also had 35 service aces for the Spartans.

The AMC Coach of the Year for 2005 is John Yehling of Missouri Baptist University. In his first season at the helm of the Spartans’ program, Yehling guided the team to a 28-5 regular-season record and a second-place finish in the AMC standings at 12-2.

A complete list of the 12-member AMC All-Conference team, the honorable mention squad and the Academic All-Conference team, are listed on the following pages. Members of the Academic All-Conference team have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
