BAYER BECOMES TWO-TIME COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
June 21, 2022
Story by Missouri Baptist Athletics
AUSTIN, Texas - With the decorated career of Missouri Baptist cross country/track & field star Emily Bayer coming to an end, the senior added yet another prestigious award to her resume. On Tuesday, Bayer was one of 11 named to the Academic All-America First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It marks the second straight year that the Spartans' distance runner has earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, but the first as a First Team honoree.
Acknowledged as one of the most selective and prestigious awards in all of college athletics, the CoSIDA Academic All-America program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the court and in the classroom. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, be an important starter/reserve, and have completed one full calendar year at their current institution.
Bayer graduated Summa Cum Laude this spring with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a cumulative grade-point average of 3.97. In the classroom, the Imperial, Mo. native made the MBU Dean's list six times with five President's Citations (4.0 semester GPA) and the Honor Roll twice.
Athletically, Bayer has been busy from start to finish. During her illustrious four-year career, Bayer qualified for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships each year and was a five-time NAIA Track & Field national qualifier. In March, Bayer ran a sub 5-minute mile (4.57.66) at Indoor National to secure her first career NAIA All-American award and take bronze in the event.
The long list of accomplishments doesn't stop there as Bayer has dominated particularly at the conference level. As a junior in 2020-21, Bayer won the AMC Cross Country individual title and earned AMC Runner of the Year. In 2019-20, she was named AMC Indoor Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet, and as a freshman, she won AMC Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year honors. In total, Bayer piled up 10 AMC Cross Country and Track & Field Runner of the Week awards and 22 AMC All-Conference nods (4 - XC, 18 - T&F).
Bayer is one of eight Spartans named a CoSIDA Academic All-American this year and the 29th in school history. She will be honored with the prestigious achievement at this year's Spartan Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet scheduled for Thursday, October 27, 2022.
