Hurst Calls It A Career After 47 Years of Coaching

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) announces the retirement of longtime coach, faculty member, and mentor Dan Hurst, who concludes an extraordinary 47-year career in coaching, including 25 years of dedicated service to HLGU.
Hurst joined Hannibal-LaGrange University in 2001, serving as head softball coach and faculty member throughout his time at HLGU. During his tenure, he also contributed as head volleyball coach and served as Division Chair of the Physical Education department, leaving a lasting impact on both the athletic and academic experiences of countless students.
Over nearly five decades in coaching, Hurst has led programs in football, track and field, basketball, softball, and volleyball. His breadth of experience and commitment to student-athlete development have made him a respected figure not only at HLGU but across the broader collegiate athletics community.
"Dan has been more than a coach and colleague to me—he's been a longtime friend and a mentor who has shaped the way I approach coaching and leadership," said Clay Biggs, Athletic Director at Hannibal-LaGrange University. "His impact goes far beyond the field, and I'm personally grateful for the influence he's had on my life and so many others."
Throughout his time at HLGU, Hurst has been known for his steady leadership, passion for teaching, and unwavering commitment to the mission of the university. His influence extends far beyond the playing field, as he has helped guide students in their academic and personal journeys.
