St. Louis, Mo. -(Championship Page) The Cottey College Comets won the 2024 American Midwest Conference (AMC) Softball Championship on Saturday in Columbia, Mo., defeating Williams Baptist University, 3-2.

  • Cottey won their first AMC softball Tournament.

  • Cottey struck first as Karina Ramirez scored on an RBI bunt single by Amelia Gassman in the first inning.

  • Kennedy Johnson tied the game for Williams Baptist with a solo home run in the top of the third.

  • The Eagles took the lead in the fourth on Maddi Althenal's single driving in Madyson Shoebottom who doubled three batters earlier.

  • The Comets then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gassman scored on an outfield error allowing Elizabeth Thomas to reach base. Aariana Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Lauren Johnson with the ultimate winning run.

  • Alyssa Montoya for Cottey and Emberlin Caldwell had similar numbers in the circle as both allowed six hits and two earned runs. Montoya struck out three and walked on in seven innings. Caldwell struck out one and walked two in six innings.

  • Offensively, Gassman was the only player on either team with multiple hits (2-for-3). Ten players, six for the Eagles and four for the Comets finished with a hit.

The Comets have earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The 48-team field will be announced on Tuesday, May 7 at 4:00 p.m. on the NAIA YouTube channel.
