AMC Championship Spotlight: Women's Golf

EUGENE, Mo. – As the 2020 American Midwest Conference Championships would be underway had it not been for COVID-19 canceling the spring sports' season in March, the Conference takes a look back at each Championship over the last decade and will highlight one Championship/postseason Tournament per sport. The 2020 AMC Women's Golf Championships would have been April 27-28 at Redfield Golf Club in Eugene, Mo.. We look back at the 2019 AMC Women's Golf Championships, which had a close team finish and the 2018 individual crown that came down to a playoff.

In 2019, William Woods was trailing by four strokes to Freed-Hardeman heading to the final round of the Championships. The Owls, who tallied a 312 in round one, trimmed seven-strokes off their team total to win the event by seven strokes.

Due to weather, the teams played 27 holes on day one, leaving just nine holes to play on a rainy day two.

The Owls were three strokes behind Freed-Hardeman at the end of the 27 holes. William Woods shot a 153 on the final nine holes on day two, outshooting the Lady Lions by 11 strokes to capture the conference title.

Maria Zrodowska of William Woods won the individual title carding a 69-75—144 (E) for the two-rounds. The Jaroslawiec, Zachodniopomorskie, Poland-native was named Player and Freshman of the Year.

The Owls had three other golfers place in the top-10: Lucy Matthews finished sixth (83-73—156), Krystal Burgtorf (81-78—159) and Paige Hawkins (79-80—159) finished in a tie for eighth-place.

Freed-Hardeman, was in the team leader after round one, carding a 308-316—624. The Lady Lions were led by Brittany Myers (77-76—153) and Kayland Boling (74-80-154) whos finished third and fourth, respectively. Chloe Kraus (81-77—158) finished seventh and Kirsten Parker (76-83—159) placed in a tie for eighth.

2018 featured the best individual finish over the past 10 years. Katie Warren and Fumika Matsumoto, both of William Woods, finished in a tie for first. Warren carded a 73-76—149, while Matsumoto shot 75-74—149.

The two golfers headed to the first playoff hole, where they matched each other. The two athletes continued to match one another, until the seventh playoff hole, when Warren was able to finish the hole in one shot fewer than Matsumoto.

The duo led the Owls to the team title (299-307—606), 29 strokes better than Freed-Hardeman. In addition to Warren and Matsumoto, Megan Cullen (75-74—149) and Lucy Matthews (78-77—155) finished third and fourth, respectively.
